SUMMARY

Improvising as the de-construction of forms and relationships. The paper is based on reflections arising from the Author’s experience in conducting improvising workshops; it provides historical, analytic and philosophical perspectives on music improvising. Speaking of different improvising modalities, the author refers to two different main varieties illustrated by musician Derek Bailey: idiomatic and non-idiomatic improvising. In addition to the general introduction on the topic, the thoughts of French musicologist and psychoanalyst Michel Imberty on the relationship among gesture, movement and musical construction, in both adult and child, are presented. The improviser’s performance is analysed not only in relation to his/her musical knowledge but also in relation to his/her personal life path, and put in the context of other musicians he or she is improvising with and integrating with on a sensory level. Relationality, as stated by philosopher Davide Sparti, is fundamental to identity.

Key words: Music improvising; jazz; gesture; movement.
